“I just don’t know how to relax. Why does doing nothing feel so difficult?”
Have you ever noticed that the moment you finally have nothing to do, you instinctively reach for your phone? Or perhaps you tell yourself you’ll “just quickly” check your emails, scrolling, or looking for another task to keep yourself occupied.
We often assume relaxation should come naturally. Yet for many people, it doesn’t. Sitting quietly for even a few minutes can feel surprisingly uncomfortable. But why?
Because the brain has become better at surviving than resting. Just as we train our bodies through repetition, we also train our minds. Every time we respond to boredom with activity, silence with a podcast, or rest with another task, we reinforce the habit of constant engagement. This becomes the foundation for everything else.
Some people proudly describe themselves as workaholics. They genuinely enjoy being productive and constantly occupied. There’s nothing inherently wrong with loving your work. But the danger is when you lose the ability to stop. When being busy is the only way you know how to be. Can you stop when you choose to?
Can you sit with yourself for ten minutes without feeling the urge to do something? Test yourself. If yes, congratulations. But if not, then it is The brain’s default mode.
Studies show when external tasks stop, the brain doesn’t simply “switch off.” It activates the Default Mode Network (DMN), a network involved in self-reflection, memories, future planning, and mind-wandering. For many people, this flood of internal thoughts can feel uncomfortable, which is one reason silence feels difficult. 1
In another study published in Science journal, some participants preferred giving themselves a mild electric shock over sitting alone with their thoughts for a few minutes. The study highlights how uncomfortable the untrained mind can find stillness. 2
“I can’t take a break because my mind won’t stop.”
That's natural, when everything becomes quiet… those emotions finally have space.This doesn’t mean relaxation is harmful or something that you should fear. It means the body finally feels safe enough to notice what has been waiting. Grief. Fear. Loneliness. Anger. Uncertainty.
“But if I’m functioning well, why should I care?”
Because the ability to recover is just as important as the ability to perform. Imagine owning the world’s best smartphone. You use it all day. You never plug it in. Eventually the battery dies. The phone wasn’t weak. It simply wasn’t recharged. Humans are similar. It’s part of how the system continues to function well. Think about strength training, you don’t become stronger while lifting the weights. You become stronger while recovering after lifting them. The same principle applies to the nervous system.

I hear this surprisingly often. But relaxation isn’t the same as doing nothing. It’s a skill—and like any skill, it can be learned.
Relaxation can look different for different people. It may be a Yoga Nidra practice, gentle Yin Yoga, slow diaphragmatic breathing, a mindful walk, a massage, or simply lying down and allowing your body to soften. The method matters less than one thing: giving your nervous system permission to shift from survival mode to relaxation mode. Remember, not only practice makes perfect but also it makes patterns. And stimulation and relaxation is a pattern which needs to be created.
When the Mind Forgets How to Relax
Yoga has long described this through the concepts of Adhi and Vyadhi. Adhi refers to disturbances that arise in the mind—persistent stress, emotional conflict, and the inability to find inner rest. When these remain unresolved, they can gradually contribute to Vyadhi (physical illness).
The signs often appear quietly—difficulty switching off, guilt when you’re being unproductive, waking up mentally tired despite sleeping, and a constant urge to stay occupied. Over time, this prolonged state of activation can affect sleep, digestion, concentration, emotional regulation, immune function, and overall well-being.
Modern research echoes this understanding. When the nervous system remains in a prolonged state of stress without adequate relaxation, it can gradually contribute to both psychological and physical health problems. 3
Isn’t Sleep Enough?
Sleep is essential but it isn't the same as relaxation. Sleep supports memory, tissue repair, hormone regulation, and countless other biological processes. Relaxation is something we experience while we are awake. It is the process of consciously allowing the body and mind to shift away from constant effort to conscious rest.
Have you ever been lying on the couch with your eyes closed while mentally rehearsing tomorrow’s meeting or replaying today’s conversations? Your body was still. Your nervous system wasn’t. Both sleep and conscious relaxation are important. One cannot fully replace the other.
What Changes When We Learn to Relax?
Learning to relax doesn’t remove stress from life, it changes how we respond to it. You don’t stop having busy days. You simply stop carrying them with you.
You become more present with your family, more focused at work, and more patient with yourself. Decisions become clearer, recovery becomes faster, and even creativity has room to return.
Studies show that regular relaxation intervals practices can improve attention, productivity, emotional regulation, sleep quality, and resilience while reducing stress and burnout. 4
Knowing that you need to relax is the first step. Learning how to relax is next. Start small. Try the Pomodoro Technique by taking a mindful break every 25 minutes—a short walk, a glass of water, a few slow deep breaths, or simply resting your eyes. You can also try the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Exercise, Yoga Nidra, or Yin Yoga. Each pause can be a step toward a calmer mind.
